Department of German Language and Literature began activity in 1993 and then education in 1995 after establishment of Sakarya University in 1992. Today bachelor’s degrees, master’s degree, as well as, under the Department of German Language and Literture doctoral degree are provided.
The language of instruction in the Department of German Language and Literature is German. The primary goal of the department is to train students, who only take language courses during the preparatory year, as competent philologists who can understand and discuss the target language, analyze literary texts with a critical perspective, and translate between languages. Successful students who achieve the requirements can pursue a minor or double major in other departments of the faculty.
Graduates of the department can work in public or private institutions, particularly in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They can also be employed in media, tourism, communication and information sectors.
Students, who have achieved the desired language level in preparatory class, set their target from first class by identifying their own competence in lessons such as Verbal communication, Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Literature, Comparative Grammar, Literary History, Turkish-German Relations, Modern German Literature, Translation, Literature Translation, Text Linguistics, EU-Turkish Relations, Commercial Correspondence, Presentation and Discussion, Screenplay Writing, Contemporary German Literature, interdisciplinary Studies, Tourism and Guidance, Professional Translation with texts, Interpretation Techniques of Literature. Training well-equipped people, who know very well both Turkish culture and western culture, particularly German culture, is among the most important goals of the department with rich and diverse curriculum.
Opportunities Provided By The Department
Students in German Language and Literature can pursue a double major with the Departments of Psychology, Sociology, and Turkish Language and Literature. There are also special interest courses in the areas of Language Education, Literary Studies and Cultural Studies with the aim of helping students find their area of interest.
The Department of German Language and Literature has been accredited by FEDEK since 2018. There are ERASMUS agreements with Germany, Czechia, Latvia, Hungary and Poland, and MEVLANA foreign exchange agreements with Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Morocco and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Malaysia and Jordan. The department also has agreements with various universities in Turkey as part of the FARABI program.
The Students, who graduated from this department, have opportunity to find a job in Tourism, Information, Hotel Business, Logistics and Banking industries and other private sectors, such as in German firms or Turkish- German joint venture companies, which are common in the Marmara Region. Also the students can work as a German teacher by training pedagogical formation in Sakarya University, Faculty of Education.
