Department of German Language and Literature began activity in 1993 and then education in 1995 after establishment of Sakarya University in 1992. Today bachelor’s degrees, master’s degree, as well as, under the Department of German Language and Literture doctoral degree are provided. The language of instruction in the Department of German Language and Literature is German. The primary goal of the department is to train students, who only take language courses during the preparatory year, as competent philologists who can understand and discuss the target language, analyze literary texts with a critical perspective, and translate between languages. Successful students who achieve the requirements can pursue a minor or double major in other departments of the faculty. Graduates of the department can work in public or private institutions, particularly in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They can also be employed in media, tourism, communication and information sectors.
